Making Adobes

This week we needed to make 200 mud adobes by hand for a small wall for our biodigester project. Yes - 200. The process seemed simple enough...make some mud, then form the mud into small bricks. I thought, sure, we can make 200 in like 2 hours, right?! Wrong...

How to make your own adobes (ps - for a house you need thousands of these)

Step 1 - Make mud

Step 2 - Add leaves or other dry organic matter to the mud

Step 3 - Mix the mud (this is easiest to do with your feet)

Step 4 - Place mud in a wooden mold

Step 5 - Mush the mud around with your hands to get the air out

Step 6 - Smooth the top with some water on your hands

Step 7 - Remove the mold and repeat...199 more times!
